OUR EXPERIENCE

Years before we launched Good & Simple, we discovered frankincense essential oil and its amazing benefits and variety of uses. It quickly became a must-have oil to have on-hand in both of our homes. From using frankincense in after-sun care to facial serums and even ticks, this oil has been a mainstay in our homemade formulations for years.

In fact, we are so passionate about frankincense that we included it in 3 of 4 face & body balms in Good & Simple's capsule line.

Are you ready to experience the magic of frankincense in your skincare routine? If you answered "yes", then read on.

HISTORY

Frankincense essential oil has been used for centuries due to its many health benefits. Perhaps most notably known as part of the Christmas story, frankincense was one of the three gifts the wise men presented to Jesus shortly after his birth.

A soothing and emotionally grounding oil, frankincense essential oil (EO) has a woody, lemon-like, spicy aroma.

This essential oil is made from the resin of the Boswellia tree, commonly found growing in Somalia and Pakistan. Boswellia trees are extremely resilient and can survive in very dry conditions. The genus Boswellia comprises more than twenty species and are found across regions of Africa, India, and the Middle East.

VARIETIES

The three most common varieties of frankincense essential oil are: Boswellia CarteriiBoswellia Frereana and Boswellia Serrata.

At Good & Simple, we use USDA-certified organic, non-GMO, sustainably harvested Boswellia Carterii and Boswellia Frereana in our products. Both varieties of frankincense are considered safe for pregnancy, nursing, kids, and pup & pony.

Pro Tip: When reviewing product ingredients, check that the essential oil is pure and sustainably harvested. Reports validating purity should also be available on an essential oil company's website. Ideally, selecting essential oils that are USDA-certified organic is a great plus as well (#readyourlabels). The USDA-certified organic label ensures the oil does not contain any GMOs, synthetic fertilizers or harmful pesticides.

BENEFITS & PROPERTIES

The benefits of including frankincense essential oil in your skincare routine are many. Below are just a few worth highlighting:

    • Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral and antiseptic properties
    • May improve skin's overall appearance and clear blemishes
    • Excellent for smoothing the appearance of wrinkles, scars, dry and damaged skin
    • May promote faster wound healing and improve skin elasticity (prevent/reduce appearance of stretch marks)
    • May relieve joint pain due to natural aging or overuse
    • Grounding and calming oil that supports a relaxed, calm and uplifted mood

This impressive list of benefits makes it easy to see why frankincense is a must-have ingredient in your non-toxic skincare lineup. By choosing natural ingredients, you can feed and nourish your skin to achieve a healthy, glowing complexion.

A study of Boswellia Frereana EO demonstrated its ability to prevent collagen degradation and lower inflammation.

Per the abstract conclusion of the study, "We have demonstrated that B. frereana prevents collagen degradation, and inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory mediators and MMPs. Due to its efficacy we propose that B. frereana should be examined further as a potential therapeutic agent for treating inflammatory symptoms associated with arthritis."
