Article Summary: Maybe you've recently heard the buzzword "waterless" mentioned in the skincare world. Good & Simple Face & Body Balms have been waterless since the beginning. Explore waterless skincare and its benefits (hint - less is more) and learn what is required in skincare when using water - preservatives and emulsifiers. Consider replacing your lotion, cream, or serum with a Good & Simple Face & Body Balm today.
The "waterless trend" is growing in popularity in the skincare world as people are waking up to the value (both to your skin and wallet) of purchasing products that are waterless.
While the term may be trending, the benefits are many and this type of skincare has serious staying power. As they say, "Everything old is new again". Let's define "waterless" and why it's gaining momentum -- and from our viewpoint is here to stay.
WATERLESS DEFINED
A waterless skincare product simply means that no water is used in the skincare product. Waterless skincare is undiluted, nutrient-dense, and highly concentrated. In short, you're getting all the goodies and no fillers.
A balm is a perfect example of waterless skincare (yep! no preservatives or emulsifiers required). Balms are highly concentrated and serve as a deeply hydrating moisturizer for the skin. Composed primarily of hard fats and oils, a little balm goes a long way!
On average, a balm is 2x more concentrated than its lotion equivalent. For example, if you remove the preservatives, water and emulsifiers from an 8 oz. bottle of lotion, you are left with a 4 oz. balm. In fact, in a 2021 Forbes article titled, "Everything You Need To Know About Waterless Beauty", Vapor Beauty co-founder and formulator, Kristine Keheley, shared that most water-based products contain up to 70% water. Wow! Water is an inexpensive ingredient...we'll let you take it from here.
BENEFITS
The benefits of going waterless in your skincare routine:
- No preservatives required = no endocrine disruptors
- No emulsifiers required = no endocrine disruptors
- Highly concentrated product
- Highly bio-available ingredients that your skin and body can actually use
- Not paying for a product that is 50-70% water
Creating a skincare routine that is as close to toxin-free as you can be in today's world is a big step in leveling up your daily health and wellness regime. Start small and just replace/swap your toxic skincare products as you can -- the sooner the better if you are dealing with any health issues that may be linked to toxin overload in your system.
DOWNSIDE (WITH A SILVER LINING)
The ONLY downside we want to point out is that natural products formulated free of preservatives will have a shorter shelf-life than their counterpart. But, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Do we really need to hang on to skincare products for years only to find them in the back of the cabinet sprouting grey hair five years later -- only to throw them out half full? We think not.
In fact, we would argue that purchasing products with a shorter shelf life will encourage you to use it as intended and you may be less apt to push it aside to use some other time.
Did we just turn this downside into a benefit?!? Well, you can decide on that one.
